Therapy vs Coaching

Therapy vs Coaching

Trauma recovery coaches do not operate using a traditional medical model as therapists do. They do not diagnose, treat, or prescribe. Coaches are excellent resources and can be an important addition to the mental healthcare team, but they should not replace a therapist when one is needed. Therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and licensed counselors are often the first line of defense. Think of them as like when you go to the ER of a hospital for help with an immediate problem. Coaches often join the team after the initial crisis has been addressed.

As your coach, I would offer you trauma-informed coaching and care. Everything I do, I look at through the lens of trauma and how it affects your body, heart, soul, and mind. I focus on helping you understand the truth of your story and how that has affected your life. We will work on healing from the devastating effects of shame, and helping you understand how loved and valued you are.

Again, Trauma Recovery Coaches work with their clients to help them understand the effects of trauma on every aspect of their lives. They approach their clients as individuals who are having a normal reaction to an abnormal (trauma) experience.

Coaches focus on helping their clients build healthy beliefs, positive (and realistic) coping strategies, and identifying their own unique gifts and strengths to help them heal along the way. Coaches are guides, mentors, and teachers to the client. They are listeners and encouragers. Coaches help the client reach personal goals to aid in their own recovery and future.

Trauma recovery coaches provide a safe relationship for the client to help them, over time, to reconnect with another person (trauma causes disconnection and isolation due to shame) in a safe space.

The goal of both therapy and coaching is for the good of the client. Both want healing and restoration and LIFE for the client as they move forward. The approach is just different for therapists and coaches, and that is okay! That’s the beauty of a team approach.
